Scythe

This review is for Scythe by Neal Shusterman.

Having gotten this book through an audible deal, I didn't know very much about it going in. The concepts presented by the synopsis were intriguing and I knew this was a popular book, so I thought I might as well read it.

The world Neal created is incredibly well thought out and unique. If you have ever wondered what a world without death would be like, this book poses a very believable theory. The inclusion of the Thunderhead, the all-knowing AI that has essentially perfected the world, was a surprising aspect to the book, and I've come to love the Thunderhead.

Citra and Rowan are great characters to root for during this book. At first I felt like Citra's character was a little flat and liked Rowan more, but throughout the course of the book, I found myself liking her more and more. Rowan's character actually had the opposite effect for me. I loved his character at the start, but I hated the paths he was forced down and how he changed because of it. However, after reading the second book in this series, I've come to respect and start to like him again.

When reading this book, I started to loathe Rowan's character development. At first, I couldn't believe the changes he started undergoing and didn't agree with his actions. However, in looking back, it ends up making sense how he grows based on the influences around him.

Scythe Goddard is written excellently. I hate him so much, which is the point. He's so twisted and his ideals make my skin crawl. He's the perfect villain for this book.

The pacing of this book felt great, but there were a few moments it was slower than I would have liked. However, the desire to know what ends up happening and the concepts made me not want to put this book down.
